[08-12-01] Cambridge IV 2008
As in the previous years, Jacobs University Debating Society was represented by 2 teams and 2 adjudicators at Cambridge IV 2008. The teams "Jacobs F" (Elena and Mihaela Isac) and "Jacobs M" (David Lucker and Jakob Hensing) were both ambitious to reach the break into the ESL Semifinal that for the first time took place in Cambridge this year. They were accompanied by the two adjudicators Maxime Pui Man Cheng and Brian Chan who also made the acquaintaince of former Society Presidents Gabriela Olariu, who hosted the Jacobs students, and Henrik Maedler, who joined as an independent adjudicator.
After four preliminary rounds on this year's particularly strange open motions, both Jacobs teams found themselves in what was obvioulsly an ESL break room with teams from SEE Riga and European Business School. With a first place in this debate on biofuels, Jacobs M accomplished the break into the Semifinal, whereas Jacobs F missed it by the small margin of one team point. In the Semifinal, David and Jakob argued on the abolishment of all official developmental aid and eventually had to accept teams from Riga and Amsterdam claiming the desired tickets for the Final.
The ESL tournament was won by SSE Riga A, the main tournament victory went to MIT who argued to redistribute the seats in the UN Security Council according to an auction.
